Remarkable Rocks & Admirals Arch (classic icon day)

The signature Flinders Chase day: granite and lichen at Remarkable Rocks, then Admirals Arch, fur seals and Cape du Couedic on a sealed 2WD road. Wind, freak waves and midday coaches are the real limiters — not distance.

Do not pair: Do not pair the icon boardwalks with Ravine, Harvey’s Return, West Bay or a KIWT start on a first mixed-group day. Platypus Waterholes is the only add-on if daylight and energy remain.

Turnaround: If the visitor centre or 0428 766 269 says wind has closed the icons, do not hunt an unofficial viewpoint. Reverse to Platypus Waterholes or the café. Ferry sailors: reverse the moment the sailing buffer is gone — skip Weirs Cove and the 2 km cape loop.

  • Treating Adelaide + ferry + Rocks + Arch as one casual day, then missing Penneshaw.
  • Adding West Bay, Ravine or KIWT kilometres “because the boardwalks were short.”
  • Easy boardwalks (final arch steps)
  • Half day typical including drives; 30–60 min at each stop
  • Short boardwalks at each site (~1 km rocks circuit; ~800 m–1 km return at the arch)
  • Effort: easy
  • Best for: First-timers, photography, families, mixed-ability groups

Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on parks.sa.gov.au before you go.

Where you start

Flinders Chase Visitor Centre, 8125 South Coast Road, Karatta

Start at the visitor centre for tickets, maps, toilets and today’s wind/fire notes — even if you paid online. Then drive Cape du Couedic Road south (~20–25 minutes to Remarkable Rocks). This is a linked two-stop icon day, not a single trailhead circuit.

How to get there

  1. Mainland to Kangaroo Island: SeaLink or KI Connect ferry (Cape Jervis ↔ Penneshaw), or a scheduled flight to Kingscote. Factor the ferry timetable into any day plan.
  2. On-island: Playford Highway / West End Highway or South Coast Road west. About 90 minutes from Kingscote, about 1.5 hours from Penneshaw to the visitor centre.
  3. Pay per-person park entry online in advance or at the visitor centre. Coverage inside the park is limited — do not leave payment until you are at the cape.
  4. The icon road is sealed or well-formed 2WD in normal conditions. Parking at each site. Do not leave valuables visible.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Visitor centre: pay or show tickets, toilets, café/snack decision, ask about wind closures.
  2. Drive to Remarkable Rocks. Walk the signed boardwalk/circuit only. Allow 30–60 minutes for photos and interpretive signs.
  3. Continue to Cape du Couedic / Admirals Arch car parks. Boardwalk to the arch; expect steep steps on the final section.
  4. Watch seals from the platform — keep legal distance. Optional: Weirs Cove lookout or the separate 2 km Cape du Couedic Hike if energy remains.
  5. Return the same road to the visitor centre or Rocky River. Reverse is a U-turn, not a loop through remote 4WD tracks.

What to expect

This is a lookout-and-boardwalk day with real Southern Ocean weather, not a wilderness trek. Paths are short and mostly formed. The effort is driving, wind, steps at the arch, and the discipline to stay on signed rock.

Remarkable Rocks is the granite-and-lichen postcard. Admirals Arch is the natural window plus a long-nosed fur seal colony on the rocks below. Together they are the park’s must-see pair.

Day shape and logistics

Shape: visitor centre → Remarkable Rocks (30–60 min) → Cape du Couedic / Admirals Arch (30–60 min) → optional Weirs Cove or 2 km cape hike → return via Rocky River if you want platypus or heritage loops.

Bail-out is the same sealed road. The visitor centre is the reliable re-supply and phone point. There is no boom-gate further south — ticketing happens at the centre or online.

Ferry visitors must protect the return clock to Penneshaw. A late second stop that blows the sailing is a worse outcome than skipping Weirs Cove.

Hazards that actually matter here

Coastal: freak waves, slippery rock, strong wind. No swimming at these exposed sites. Stay off the seaward side of Remarkable Rocks even if someone else’s photo looks closer.

Wind can close Admirals Arch and Remarkable Rocks. Fire danger can close the whole park (Catastrophic, and possibly Extreme — check CFS). Snakes exist on warmer days — stay on trails.

Communications: Telstra is the carrier most often mentioned, and coverage is patchy to none in low-lying and remote spots. 000 needs reception. Emergency+ helps where signal exists. Download offline maps before you leave Kingscote or the visitor centre.

Reverse and what not to stack

Reverse is the same road north to the visitor centre. Do not “see what’s down West Bay Road” in a 2WD because you still have daylight.

Weak pairs for first-timers: Ravine Hike, Harvey’s Return in fading light, or starting KIWT thinking the icons were a warm-up. One icon day done well beats three remote ideas.

Kit list lives on the gear hub— Amazon searches stay there, not as a merch wall on this walk. Park fees never affiliated.

Extra tips

  • Early or late beats midday coaches for photos and parking.
  • Pack a wind layer and water. Café food lives at the visitor centre, not at the cape.
  • If wind already howls at the first car park, skip forcing the arch steps.
  • Optional add-on: Platypus Waterholes on the way back if daylight remains.

Often paired with Platypus Waterholes— only if energy and weather allow.
