Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail
Guide updated · verify open/closed status on parks.sa.gov.au
A capped, bookable 5-day trek from the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre to Kelly Hill Caves. Separate fee from day entry. Remote coast and regenerating interior. Limited bail-outs — treat it as a committed expedition.
Do not pair: Do not pair KIWT with a same-day ferry, a first-visit icon circuit, or extra Ravine kilometres. Finish at Kelly Hill as booked. Icons are a different trip.
Turnaround: You do not “see how day one feels” without a booking. If the booking is closed or fitness is honest-no, bounce to the icon day + Platypus Waterholes — that is a complete Flinders Chase trip, not a failed trek.
- Treating KIWT as a warm-up after the icon boardwalks, or walking without a live official booking.
- Carrying day-walk water because “camps have taps” — official FAQ: drinking water is at campgrounds only, not along the day’s walk (3 L/person/day listed).
- Grade 4 — long, rough, steep sections, limited signage
- 5 days typical; daily 10–17 km / 3.5–6.5 hours
- Official KIWT pages: 66 km over 5 days (Class 4)
- Effort: hard
- Best for: Fit, booked multi-day walkers
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on parks.sa.gov.au before you go.

Where you start
Flinders Chase Visitor Centre induction
You start with official induction at the visitor centre, then walk to designated on-trail camps. Finish at Kelly Hill Caves. This is not a day-walk you join halfway from a car park.
How to get there
- Book the official KIWT product on parks.sa.gov.au before you travel. Daily numbers are capped.
- Arrive via ferry or flight with enough island time to start on your booked day — do not cut it against a late Penneshaw sailing.
- Park at the visitor centre as included in the trail package (confirm current inclusions).
- Optional paid bus transfer from Kelly Hill Caves back to the visitor centre at the end — book if you need it.
How to do it (step by step)
- Complete official booking and read the live packing list / fitness self-assessment on the KIWT pages.
- Official FAQ: drinking water is only at campgrounds (filtered rainwater listed), not along the day’s walk. Carry a minimum of 3 L per person per day.
- Walk only to designated camps; one night maximum per site.
- Download offline maps while you still have reception. Mobile is not guaranteed.
- Finish at Kelly Hill Caves. Do not invent a shortcut to a remote beach road.
What to expect
Five days of regenerating post-fire woodland and remote Southern Ocean coast. Days are long enough to be honest work. Camps are basic pads with limited facilities — confirm the current camp list officially.
This is a different product from the Remarkable Rocks boardwalk. If you want icons only, do the classic day instead.
Booking, water, finish
Booking is mandatory. Official FAQ 15 Aug 2026: max 12 independent walkers and 36 commercial-guided walkers, 48 total including guides (max 24 campers per campground). The independent fee includes park entry for the trail period, visitor-centre parking and a trail guide/map. Best season listed: March–November.
Water carry is critical. Finish logistics (Kelly Hill + optional bus) must be booked or arranged before you start. Bail-outs mid-trail are limited — write this up as a committed undertaking.
Communications and safety
Do not rely on a phone. Download official maps (Avenza is commonly recommended) while still in range. 000 needs reception. Emergency+ is useful where a signal exists. A satellite messenger is a reasonable optional tool here.
Check CFS and park alerts before each departure season. The park can close on severe fire-danger days. Snakes, cliffs and weather still apply even when the trail is “open.”
Who it suits (and who should bounce)
Fit walkers with a confirmed official booking, a water plan and limited-bail-out honesty. Not first-timers who meant to see Remarkable Rocks. Not children under 10 (officially not recommended).
If you bounce, keep the ferry and do the icon day plus Platypus Waterholes. That is still a complete Flinders Chase trip — not a failed trek.
Kit list lives on the gear hub— Amazon searches stay there, not as a merch wall on this walk. Park fees never affiliated.

Extra tips
- Official FAQ snapshot 15 Aug 2026: independent adult $220 (concession $177 / child $128) — includes park entry for the trail period [VERIFY].
- Guided commercial trips are licensed separately; you still need the official trail product.
- Not recommended for children under 10.
- A personal satellite messenger is a realistic planning note on this trail.
