Cape du Couedic Hike
Guide updated · verify open/closed status on parks.sa.gov.au
Short coastal loop at Cape du Couedic with interpretive signs, lighthouse precinct views and Southern Ocean cliffs. Best as an add-on after Admirals Arch, not a replacement for the arch boardwalk.
Do not pair: Do not pair this loop with Ravine, Harvey’s Return or West Bay. Arch first, then the loop if wind and the clock still allow.
Turnaround: Cliff wind, a tired child, or a ferry buffer that is already gone. Reverse to the visitor centre. The loop is optional quality, not a required upgrade.
- Doing the loop first and running out of energy/steps for Admirals Arch.
- Using the loop as a warm-up for Ravine or West Bay the same afternoon.
- Short coastal loop (confirm official grade)
- Around 40 minutes
- About 2 km loop
- Effort: easy
- Best for: Adding cliff context after the arch without a half-day commitment
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on parks.sa.gov.au before you go.

Where you start
Cape du Couedic car parks
Start from the signed Cape du Couedic precinct after you have already parked for Admirals Arch / the lighthouse. Confirm arrows on site — do not invent a cliff-edge shortcut.
How to get there
- Same access as the icon day: visitor centre, then Cape du Couedic Road.
- Park in signed cape car parks. Do not block emergency access.
How to do it (step by step)
- Do Admirals Arch first if steps and wind still look friendly.
- Walk the signed 2 km loop. Stay back from unfenced cliff edges.
- Weirs Cove lookout is the usual extra viewpoint if marked open.
- Return to the car and reverse to the visitor centre.
What to expect
A short, scenic loop that adds lighthouse and cliff context after the arch. Interpretive signs help, but the weather is still a Southern Ocean headland.
If anyone expected only the arch boardwalk, stop there. The loop is optional quality, not a required upgrade.
Lighthouse precinct honesty
Cape du Couedic Lighthouse is a photography and history stop. Interiors and tower access are not automatic — confirm what is actually open on the day. Weirs Cove and Casuarina Islets views are the usual extra if marked.
Do not treat the loop as a warm-up for Ravine or West Bay the same afternoon. Headland wind plus arch steps already emptied most first-timer tanks.
Pairing with Admirals Arch
The competent order is arch first (while steps and wind still look friendly), then the loop if anyone still wants cliffs. Reverse if the arch queue is ugly and the loop looks empty — but do not skip the arch entirely unless it is closed.
Ferry sailors: if the clock is already tight after the arch, skip the loop. A calm reverse to the visitor centre beats a late sailing.
Kit list lives on the gear hub— Amazon searches stay there, not as a merch wall on this walk. Park fees never affiliated.

Extra tips
- Skip the loop if the group is already tired from arch steps.
- Lighthouse interiors are not automatically part of this walk — check what is open.
Often paired with Rocks + Arch— only if energy and weather allow.
