Flinders Chase trails & lookouts

Start with a clear boardwalk icons vs remote walk decision. Remarkable Rocks + Admirals Arch covers most first visits. Distances, grades and times below are planning ranges — always confirm on parks.sa.gov.au and park alerts. Weather, closures and stair status change.

Decide before you lace up

  • Easy icons: Remarkable Rocks boardwalk, Admirals Arch (final steps), Platypus Waterholes, Cape du Couedic loop.
  • Moderate remote: Ravine Hike and Cape Borda’s longer cart track — often 4WD or a dedicated drive.
  • Hard multi-day: Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail — booked, capped, Grade 4, water carry.

Stacking two hard walks plus the postcard lookout is the classic first-visit failure mode. Pick the table row that matches energy, then open the full trail guide for getting-there detail.

Trail FAQs

What is the best first walk in Flinders Chase?

Most first-timers do the Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch boardwalks on the sealed 2WD road, then add Platypus Waterholes only if energy and daylight remain. Ravine, West Bay and KIWT are not first-day upgrades. Always verify status with parks.sa.gov.au.

How hard are the walks?

The icon boardwalks are easy (arch has steep final steps). Platypus Waterholes is an easy two-hour walk. Ravine and Cape Borda’s longer options are moderate and often need 4WD access. KIWT is Grade 4 over five booked days.

Can I add Ravine or KIWT onto the icon day?

Usually a bad first-visit plan. Icons plus platypus already fill a ferry day. KIWT is a separate booked product. Ravine needs 4WD access and a dedicated half-day.

Are the icon boardwalks accessible?

Remarkable Rocks is a rebuilt Grade 1 boardwalk. Admirals Arch is mostly accessible with a steep final section of steps. Confirm live accessibility notes on parks.sa.gov.au if anyone in the group needs step-free access.

Do I need 4WD for any of these walks?

Not for Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch, Platypus Waterholes or the Cape du Couedic loop. Ravine trailhead and West Bay / Harvey’s Return access recommend or require 4WD and can close after rain. Check the visitor centre before you leave sealed road.
