Prioritise Kingscote for services, Penneshaw for the ferry, or Parndana / Vivonne Bay to sit closer to the west end. Book official campgrounds only via parks.sa.gov.au. Rocky River is the practical 2WD camp. West Bay is 4WD only.

Fuel, food and medical sit in towns. The visitor centre café is a gateway snack, not a supermarket. Official camping is parks.sa.gov.au only — never affiliated. Commercial beds below may earn a commission.
Families
Kingscote for services and a 90-minute morning run. Official Rocky River if you can book 2WD camping with showers listed — confirm live. Skip West Bay with a sedan and kids.
Early starts / closest to the icons
Parndana or Vivonne Bay shorten the dawn drive. Fill fuel the night before — there is no bowser at Remarkable Rocks.
Ferry clock
Penneshaw if you land late or sail early. It is the longer drive to Flinders Chase — do not pretend it is a 20-minute hop to the granite.
Medical
Triple Zero. Kingscote is the island’s main services town. This page is not a clinic directory. Park phones on Plan your visit.

Official campgrounds
Rocky River, Harvey’s Return, Snake Lagoon, West Bay and others — book only via parks.sa.gov.au. Snapshot 15 Aug 2026: Rocky River listed at $38/night; park page accommodation from $19.80. Unpowered, pack waste out, carry drinking water. This site does not affiliate official camping.
Main island services hub: fuel, food, airport and commercial beds. About 90 minutes to the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre. Strong default overnight if you want recovery after the west-end day.
Western KI landscape context — not a hotel exterior
Ferry gateway. Useful if you land late or sail early. Longer drive to Flinders Chase than Kingscote — protect the sailing clock if you day-trip the icons.
A tour does not replace checking parks.sa.gov.au alerts, wind closures, or coastal safety yourself.
What to bring
Practical kit for Southern Ocean wind, cape boardwalks and patchy coverage
Water 2–3 L+ per personRemote sections and KIWT have no reliable drinking water. Rainwater at camps is non-potable.
Windproof / waterproof shellCape du Couedic and Remarkable Rocks are exposed Southern Ocean headlands — wind closes sites.
Sun hat + high SPFBoardwalks and granite are open; post-fire woodland still has thin shade in places.
Grip walking shoesBoardwalks are easy; Snake Lagoon / Ravine rock-hops get slick after rain. Stay off seaward rocks.
Day pack 20–30 LWater, layers, snacks and a small first-aid kit for the icon day plus any extra walk.
Offline maps (Avenza)Telstra can be patchy; download official park maps while you still have reception.
HeadlampDawn platypus walks and winter ferry days run out of light faster than mainland visitors expect.
First-aid + blister kitRemote west-end days are a long way from Kingscote if something goes wrong.
Satellite messenger (remote / KIWT)Optional planning note for West Bay, Ravine and KIWT — 000 needs reception. Not required for the sealed icon road.
Insect protectionPlatypus Waterholes and swamp edges can be buggy, especially after rain.
Warm mid-layerWinter and wind at the capes feel much colder than Kingscote or Adelaide.
Power bankScreenshot alerts, ferry tickets and offline maps; charging is limited west of the visitor centre.
