Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail corridor

The committed multi-day: official KIWT pages list 66 km over five days from the visitor centre to Kelly Hill Caves. Separate booking, daily caps, Grade 4, limited bail-outs.

  • Best for: Fit, booked walkers who want a remote coast + recovery-landscape trek
  • Time: 5 days typical; daily distances often 10–17 km / 3.5–6.5 hours
  • Start induction at Flinders Chase Visitor Centre. Finish at Kelly Hill Caves with an optional paid bus transfer back. You do not “pop in” from a car park mid-trail.

Treat it as a committed trek

KIWT is its own official product. Official FAQ 15 Aug 2026: independent adult $220 (concession $177 / child $128) [VERIFY], including park entry for the trail period, visitor-centre parking and a trail guide/map. Daily caps: max 12 independent + 36 commercial-guided = 48 total including guides. You book or you do not walk.

On-trail camping is on designated pads only, one night max per site. Commercial operators are licensed separately. Full packing lists and fitness self-assessment live on the official KIWT pages — use those, not this site, as the source of truth.

Day shape and finish

Typical days are 10–17 km. The landscape is regenerating woodland and remote coast — beautiful and exposed. Bail-out options are limited once you are on trail. Finish at Kelly Hill Caves; an optional paid bus transfer returns walkers to the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre.

If you are unsure about fitness, weather or kit, do the icon day and Platypus Waterholes instead. A demoted day in Flinders Chase is still a successful visit.

Water, kit and daylight

Official FAQ: drinking water is only at each campground (filtered rainwater listed), not along the day’s walk. Carry a minimum of 3 L per person per day. Official packing lists and fitness self-assessments live on the KIWT pages — treat those as the manual.

Weather on the remote coast can be ugly in any month. A satellite messenger is a reasonable optional tool. Headlamps, layers and a written trip intention are not optional thinking.

Who should not book this

First-timers who really wanted Remarkable Rocks. Families with children under 10 (officially not recommended). Anyone treating social-media “fastest times” as a plan.

If fitness, knees or navigation confidence is uncertain, book the icon day and Platypus Waterholes. A bounced KIWT booking plus a calm west-end week is still a successful Kangaroo Island trip.

FAQ — KIWT

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Does park entry cover KIWT?

No. Day walks are covered by park entry. KIWT is a separate booking and fee that includes park entry for the trail period. Confirm current inclusions on the official KIWT page.

Can I walk one KIWT day as a casual day walk?

Do not assume so. The trail is a booked multi-day product with designated camps. Use named day walks (Platypus Waterholes, Ravine, cape loops) unless official pages explicitly offer a day option for your date.

Is it suitable for children?

Official guidance commonly does not recommend the trail for children under 10. Grade 4, water carry and limited bail-outs are real. Verify age and fitness notes on the official KIWT pages.

What to bring

Practical kit for Southern Ocean wind, cape boardwalks and patchy coverage

  • Water 2–3 L+ per personRemote sections and KIWT have no reliable drinking water. Rainwater at camps is non-potable.
  • Windproof / waterproof shellCape du Couedic and Remarkable Rocks are exposed Southern Ocean headlands — wind closes sites.
  • Sun hat + high SPFBoardwalks and granite are open; post-fire woodland still has thin shade in places.
  • Grip walking shoesBoardwalks are easy; Snake Lagoon / Ravine rock-hops get slick after rain. Stay off seaward rocks.
  • Day pack 20–30 LWater, layers, snacks and a small first-aid kit for the icon day plus any extra walk.
  • Offline maps (Avenza)Telstra can be patchy; download official park maps while you still have reception.
  • HeadlampDawn platypus walks and winter ferry days run out of light faster than mainland visitors expect.
  • First-aid + blister kitRemote west-end days are a long way from Kingscote if something goes wrong.
  • Satellite messenger (remote / KIWT)Optional planning note for West Bay, Ravine and KIWT — 000 needs reception. Not required for the sealed icon road.
  • Insect protectionPlatypus Waterholes and swamp edges can be buggy, especially after rain.
  • Warm mid-layerWinter and wind at the capes feel much colder than Kingscote or Adelaide.
  • Power bankScreenshot alerts, ferry tickets and offline maps; charging is limited west of the visitor centre.
