West Bay, Snake Lagoon & Ravine
4WD and seasonal-road country: Snake Lagoon, West Bay Campground, Ravine des Casoars Wilderness Protection Area. Quieter beaches and longer hikes — not the sealed icon day.
- Best for: High-clearance vehicles, experienced walkers, remote camping
- Time: Half day to full day once you leave the sealed road; do not stack on the icon circuit
- West Bay Road beyond Snake Lagoon, Shackle Road, Ravine Road and Harvey’s Return access recommend or require 4WD. Corrugated gravel; can close after rain.

A different park
The sealed icon road is one product. The remote west is another: corrugations, seasonal closures, 4WD, and walks that include rock-hopping and creek crossings after rain. Ravine des Casoars Wilderness Protection Area is managed with Flinders Chase but feels wilder.
Come with a high-clearance plan and a turnaround time. If the visitor centre says the road is closed, that is the answer.
Walks and camps
Snake Lagoon and Rocky River hikes are shorter coastal or cascade options; rock can be slick. Ravine Hike is about 7 km / 3 hours from a 4WD-recommended trailhead down a valley to a remote beach. West Bay Campground (park page accommodation from $19.80 — [VERIFY]) is unpowered, pack-out, 4WD only. West Bay Road past Snake Lagoon Track is official 4WD-only.
Carry drinking water. Non-potable rainwater only. Wood collection inside the park is prohibited. Fires only in designated pits outside Fire Danger Season and never on total fire ban days.
If you only have a 2WD hire car
Stay on the sealed icon road and the Rocky River precinct. Do not “just have a look” down West Bay Road because the corrugations look short on a phone map.
Snake Lagoon access can change with rain. If staff say 4WD, that is not a challenge. Rocky River Campground is the 2WD overnight that still feels like the west end.
Communications and trip intention
Coverage here is poor to none. Download Avenza / official maps while still at the visitor centre. Leave a written plan with someone who is not in the car.
A personal satellite messenger is a realistic optional note for West Bay, Ravine and overnight pads — not theatre, and not a requirement we invent for the sealed icon day. 000 needs reception.

FAQ — Remote west
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Can I take a 2WD to West Bay?
Official guidance treats West Bay Campground as 4WD only, and the road beyond Snake Lagoon as 4WD country. Do not force a 2WD hire car. Confirm live road status before you go.
Is Snake Lagoon the same as West Bay?
No. Snake Lagoon is a shorter hike / access node; West Bay Campground sits further on 4WD-only road. Confirm which product you booked. Large vans do not belong at West Bay.
Can I collect firewood?
No. Collection inside the park is prohibited. Bring your own wood only if fires are permitted in designated pits outside Fire Danger Season and not on a total ban. Gas/liquid fuel is the usual plan.
