Two-day west end: icons + camp or cottage
Best for: Visitors who can book Rocky River (or a nearby stay) and want a second, quieter morning
Guide updated · verify parks.sa.gov.au the morning you go
Day 1 classic icons. Overnight at official Rocky River Campground or a nearby town. Day 2 dawn platypus walk or Cape Borda — not both hard.

Two days lets you split coaches and wildlife. Day 1 is the sealed icon pair. Overnight is official Rocky River (or a nearby town / official cottage). Day 2 is one mission only.
Book camping and cottages only on parks.sa.gov.au — never affiliated here. Snapshot 15 Aug 2026: Rocky River listed $38/night; park page accommodation from $19.80. Confirm live rates, site size and fire rules when you book.
Day 2 stacking (platypus + Cape Borda + a 4WD beach) is how groups get sloppy on corrugated roads after a short sleep. Pick one second-day product and protect the eastbound ferry if you sail that afternoon.
Last published wood/solid-fuel ban window was 15 Nov 2025–1 Apr 2026 (ended as of this snapshot). Next Fire Danger Season is typically mid-November — verify CFS before planning a fire. Gas/liquid fuel still banned on total fire-ban days. Park closes on Catastrophic days and may close on Extreme.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on parks.sa.gov.au before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Night before you travel
Book + name Day 2
Confirm official camping or cottage booking. Say Day 2 out loud: platypus dawn OR Cape Borda — not both. Screenshot parks.sa.gov.au, CFS and your booking. Pack drinking water (rainwater is non-potable), headlamp, warm layer. If you sail Day 2, write the reverse clock now.
Day 1 morning
Classic icon day
Same shape as the one-day plan: visitor centre, Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch, café. Ask staff about tomorrow’s wind and any rain-road notes for Shackle / Harvey’s Return. Do not add West Bay on Day 1 “to save time.”
Day 1 afternoon
Check in before dusk traffic
Rocky River is a few kilometres from the visitor centre and suits 2WD / caravans (check site dimensions). Town stays (Parndana, Vivonne, Kingscote) mean a dusk wildlife drive — slow, lights dipped, no roadside stops in the lane. Heritage cottages (May’s / Postman’s) are official products if operating — two-night minimum on current official wording.
Day 1 evening
Camp craft
Unpowered sites, pack waste out, no generators, no bins. Fires only in designated communal pits outside Fire Danger Season and never on total bans. Bring your own wood if fires are permitted — collection inside the park is prohibited. Telstra can be patchy; do not rely on a late booking change from camp.
Day 2 dawn
One mission: platypus or Cape Borda
Platypus Waterholes is the easy win from Rocky River (official 4.5 km / ~2 hrs from the centre). Cape Borda is a dedicated northwest drive — 4WD recommended for Harvey’s Return camping; 2WD subject to conditions. Check wind and road notes before you leave camp. If rain closed Shackle or the northwest, stay on the woodland loops.
Day 2 midday
Café or packed lunch · no third mission
The Rocks Café is the reliable food point. If Day 2 emptied the tank, stop. Do not invent Ravine or West Bay because you still have daylight. West Bay Road past Snake Lagoon is 4WD only and can close after rain.
Day 2 afternoon
East with buffer
Fuel anxiety belongs in Parndana or Kingscote, not at a remote bay. Protect the ferry if you sail today. Debrief: was two days enough, or do you want a third night next trip?

Parking & access tips
- Rocky River is the practical camp for 2WD visitors and caravans (check dimensions).
- West Bay is 4WD only — no large vans or caravans.
- Harvey’s Return: official 4WD recommended; 2WD subject to road conditions.
- Never leave food or bags visible; wildlife and smash-and-grab both exist.
- Pay park entry as well as the camp fee — they are separate systems.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Ravine Hike
- KIWT
- Both platypus and Cape Borda on day 2
- West Bay “because we have a 4WD” after rain
- A same-evening Penneshaw sailing after a late Cape Borda finish
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Visitors who already booked Rocky River, an official cottage, or a nearby town night
- First-timers who want icons plus one quieter morning
- Groups who will pick one Day-2 mission and keep it
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If Day 1 wind closed the cape: Day 1 becomes wildlife/heritage — still a complete west-end trip
- If rain just passed: bounce Cape Borda / Shackle / West Bay and stay on sealed or formed 2WD
- If someone slept badly: platypus from camp, not a northwest drive
- If CFS is Catastrophic: you are not in the park
What success looks like
- Icons done well + one second-day product done honestly
- Waste packed out, fires only if actually permitted
- No corrugated-road heroics on a tired morning
- Notes: book a third night next time, or keep two days and skip the ferry squeeze

- Remarkable Rocks & Admirals Arch (classic icon day)The signature Flinders Chase day: granite and lichen at Remarkable Rocks, then Admirals Arch, fur seals and Cape du Couedic on a sealed 2WD road. Wind, freak waves and midday coaches are the real limiters — not distance.
- Platypus Waterholes WalkThe best longer day walk from the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre: regenerating woodland, Black Swamp and Rocky River viewing platforms. Dawn and dusk give the best platypus odds. Rebuilt after the 2019–20 fires.
- Cape Borda & Harvey’s ReturnNorthwest lightstation day: self-guided Cape Borda (included in park entry) plus either the steep 1 km Harvey’s Return hike or the longer Return Road cart track. Different ocean aspect to the southern icons.

What to bring
Practical kit for Southern Ocean wind, cape boardwalks and patchy coverage
- Water 2–3 L+ per personRemote sections and KIWT have no reliable drinking water. Rainwater at camps is non-potable.
- Windproof / waterproof shellCape du Couedic and Remarkable Rocks are exposed Southern Ocean headlands — wind closes sites.
- Sun hat + high SPFBoardwalks and granite are open; post-fire woodland still has thin shade in places.
- Grip walking shoesBoardwalks are easy; Snake Lagoon / Ravine rock-hops get slick after rain. Stay off seaward rocks.
- Day pack 20–30 LWater, layers, snacks and a small first-aid kit for the icon day plus any extra walk.
- Offline maps (Avenza)Telstra can be patchy; download official park maps while you still have reception.
- HeadlampDawn platypus walks and winter ferry days run out of light faster than mainland visitors expect.
- First-aid + blister kitRemote west-end days are a long way from Kingscote if something goes wrong.
- Satellite messenger (remote / KIWT)Optional planning note for West Bay, Ravine and KIWT — 000 needs reception. Not required for the sealed icon road.
- Insect protectionPlatypus Waterholes and swamp edges can be buggy, especially after rain.
- Warm mid-layerWinter and wind at the capes feel much colder than Kingscote or Adelaide.
- Power bankScreenshot alerts, ferry tickets and offline maps; charging is limited west of the visitor centre.
