One-day classic: Remarkable Rocks & Admirals Arch
Best for: First-timers who want the two icons without remote 4WD country
Guide updated · verify parks.sa.gov.au the morning you go
Visitor centre ticketing, Remarkable Rocks boardwalk, Admirals Arch and seals, optional Weirs Cove — reverse the same sealed road. Protect the ferry clock if you are sailing the same evening.

This is the day most people came for. Success is the two icons done well on the sealed road, plus enough buffer for wildlife, wind and a Penneshaw sailing — not a third remote hike because the boardwalks felt “too easy.”
From Kingscote budget about 90 minutes each way; from Penneshaw about 1.5 hours. A half-day on the ground is often a full calendar day once you count ferry, fuel and the island drive. Wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk is the real limiter, not the boardwalk length.
Pay entry before you rely on reception at the cape. Official Fees tab snapshot 15 Aug 2026 starts at $13 adult / $33 family — the same official park page header also lists $22.40 per person without a breakdown. Confirm the ticket you need at booking or the visitor centre.
Always verify wind closures, fire danger and fees on parks.sa.gov.au and CFS before you leave town. This itinerary is a planning skeleton, not live status.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on parks.sa.gov.au before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Night before
Pack and set the reverse clock
Say the plan out loud: primary = Remarkable Rocks + Admirals Arch. Optional = Weirs Cove or the 2 km cape loop only if wind and energy allow. Screenshot parks.sa.gov.au and CFS. Pack 2 L+ water, wind shell, snacks, grip shoes. If you sail tonight, write a hard “leave the cape by” time. Sleep early.
07:00–08:30
Leave Kingscote or Penneshaw
Fuel, water, snacks and a last status check on Wi-Fi. Drive South Coast Road or Playford / West End Highway west. Wildlife on the road at dawn — slow down; pull fully off the road for photos. Do not “just stop for a long breakfast” and inherit midday coaches.
09:00–09:40
Visitor centre
Pay or show tickets, toilets, maps. Ask staff about wind at the rocks and arch (severe wind can close both). The Rocks Café only if the group will melt without coffee — do not burn the cool morning here. EV chargers here are solar-reliant and may drop out.
10:00–11:00
Remarkable Rocks
Boardwalk and signed rocks only. 30–60 minutes. Stay off seaward granite — drownings have occurred. If wind is already closing things, enjoy what is open and skip forcing the arch steps later. That is still a successful day.
11:15–12:30
Admirals Arch & Cape du Couedic
Boardwalk plus steep final steps. Seals from the platform — legal distance, no climbing toward the colony. Optional Weirs Cove or 2 km cape loop only if energy, wind and the reverse clock allow. Confirm which lighthouse buildings are open.
12:30–14:00
Return via visitor centre
Lunch at The Rocks Café or packed food. Optional short Heritage Walk if the ferry clock is fat. Do not start Ravine, West Bay or Cape Borda on a 2WD hire car “because we still have light.”
14:00–16:30
Drive east with buffer
Penneshaw sailors need a real buffer — the sailing is a hard stop. Kingscote stays can add a slow wildlife drive. Do not speed for a kangaroo photo. If anyone is fading, stop in Parndana for fuel or food.

Parking & access tips
- Park only in signed icon car parks. Do not invent roadside parking on vegetation.
- Arrive early on peak tour-bus days — midday coaches concentrate at Rocks + Arch.
- Never leave bags visible in the car.
- Pay entry at the visitor centre (or online) before you lose reception at the cape.
- If the cape is closed by wind, bounce to Rocky River / platypus — do not wait in a closed car park.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Cape du Couedic 2 km loop
- Platypus Waterholes (save for dawn another day)
- Cape Borda
- Any 4WD road “just to see”
- A late café plus a same-evening Penneshaw sailing with no buffer
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- First-timers who came for Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch
- Groups who will protect a ferry or dusk wildlife-drive clock
- 2WD visitors who should stay on the sealed icon road
- Anyone happy if wind turns the cape into a visitor-centre + woodland day
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If parks.sa.gov.au or staff say the rocks/arch are closed for wind: bounce to Rocky River — do not improvise a cliff scramble
- If CFS is Catastrophic (or Extreme and the park may close): stay out of the park
- If the group is done after Remarkable Rocks: skip the arch steps without guilt
- If the ferry clock is tight: café + reverse now, not “one more lookout”
What success looks like
- Everyone home (or on the ferry) safely with energy for the drive
- One clear rocks-and-arch experience — or an honest wind day at Rocky River
- No invented 4WD or KIWT add-on after lunch
- Notes for next time: earlier start, overnight west, or a platypus dawn
Ferry realism
- The sailing is a hard stop. Icons plus a late café is enough.
- SeaLink / KI Connect times change — check the operator, not this site.

- Remarkable Rocks & Admirals Arch (classic icon day)The signature Flinders Chase day: granite and lichen at Remarkable Rocks, then Admirals Arch, fur seals and Cape du Couedic on a sealed 2WD road. Wind, freak waves and midday coaches are the real limiters — not distance.
- Cape du Couedic HikeShort coastal loop at Cape du Couedic with interpretive signs, lighthouse precinct views and Southern Ocean cliffs. Best as an add-on after Admirals Arch, not a replacement for the arch boardwalk.

What to bring
Practical kit for Southern Ocean wind, cape boardwalks and patchy coverage
- Water 2–3 L+ per personRemote sections and KIWT have no reliable drinking water. Rainwater at camps is non-potable.
- Windproof / waterproof shellCape du Couedic and Remarkable Rocks are exposed Southern Ocean headlands — wind closes sites.
- Sun hat + high SPFBoardwalks and granite are open; post-fire woodland still has thin shade in places.
- Grip walking shoesBoardwalks are easy; Snake Lagoon / Ravine rock-hops get slick after rain. Stay off seaward rocks.
- Day pack 20–30 LWater, layers, snacks and a small first-aid kit for the icon day plus any extra walk.
- Offline maps (Avenza)Telstra can be patchy; download official park maps while you still have reception.
- HeadlampDawn platypus walks and winter ferry days run out of light faster than mainland visitors expect.
- First-aid + blister kitRemote west-end days are a long way from Kingscote if something goes wrong.
- Satellite messenger (remote / KIWT)Optional planning note for West Bay, Ravine and KIWT — 000 needs reception. Not required for the sealed icon road.
- Insect protectionPlatypus Waterholes and swamp edges can be buggy, especially after rain.
- Warm mid-layerWinter and wind at the capes feel much colder than Kingscote or Adelaide.
- Power bankScreenshot alerts, ferry tickets and offline maps; charging is limited west of the visitor centre.
