KI Wilderness Trail — 5-day sketch

Best for: Fit walkers with a confirmed official KIWT booking

Official KIWT pages: 66 km / 5 days / Class 4. Induction at the visitor centre, on-trail camps, finish Kelly Hill Caves. Separate fee, daily caps. This page is a planning sketch — official KIWT pages are the source of truth.

Do not start this itinerary without an official booking. Day-entry tickets do not unlock the trail. Numbers are capped. Bail-outs are limited. Treat official KIWT pages as the live manual — this site is a honesty filter, not a substitute packing list.

Official FAQ snapshot 15 Aug 2026: independent adult $220 / concession $177 / child (4–15) $128 (includes park entry for the trail period, visitor-centre parking, trail guide/map). Caps: max 12 independent + 36 commercial-guided = 48 total including guides; max 24 campers per campground. Best season listed: March–November. Not recommended under 10.

Official: drinking water is only at campgrounds (filtered rainwater listed), not along the day’s walk. Carry a minimum of 3 L per person per day. If you visit park attractions before or after the walk, official FAQ says you need a separate visitor fee.

Always re-check fees, camp names, transfer-bus and fire-closure rules on parks.sa.gov.au/experiences/kiwt the week you walk. Park closes on Catastrophic fire-danger days and walkers must leave the trail.

Track status, weather and closures change — verify on parks.sa.gov.au before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. Weeks before

Book + fitness + honest bounce

Book only on official KIWT pages. Read the live packing list and fitness self-assessment. Trial walk with the pack you will carry. If knees, navigation or water discipline is uncertain, bounce now — icon day + Platypus Waterholes is still a successful Kangaroo Island trip. Leave a written trip intention with someone.

  2. Night before Day 1

    Induction clock + kit check

Confirm induction time at the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre. All hikers leave from the centre after induction on current official wording. Pack 3 L+ capacity, layers, shell, first aid, offline maps. Consider a PLB or satellite messenger — mobile is not guaranteed. Confirm the Kelly Hill transfer bus if you need it.

  3. Day 1

    Visitor-centre induction → first camp

Typical days 10–17 km / 3.5–6.5 hours plus side trips. Stay on designated pads. One night max per site. Start only after official induction. Do not treat Day 1 as a casual add-on to a Remarkable Rocks morning.

  4. Days 2–4

    Coast + recovery woodland

Remote Southern Ocean sections and regenerating interior. Weather can be ugly in any month. Fill water at camp; do not assume creeks. One night max per campground so the next group has a pad. Turnaround honesty still applies even on a booked trek — but bail-outs are limited, so the real honesty is booking (or not) before you start.

  5. Day 5

    Kelly Hill Caves finish

Optional paid bus back to the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre — arrange before Day 1. Do not plan a same-day Penneshaw sailing unless you built a huge buffer. If you want icons after the trek, that is a separate park-entry ticket on official FAQ wording.

  6. After

Debrief + do not invent a sixth day

Shower, food, sleep. Notes: water, weather, whether Grade 4 was honest for this group. Do not immediately stack Ravine or West Bay. The trail was the product.

Parking & access tips

  • Visitor-centre parking is typically included in the independent trail product — confirm current rules.
  • Do not leave the car at a remote beach “shortcut” — induction is at the visitor centre.
  • Finish logistics (Kelly Hill + optional bus) must be booked or arranged before you start.
  • Telstra may work on some high points; assume you are out of contact unless you carry a satellite device.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • The entire trail — do the icon day instead
  • Walking “just one KIWT day” unless official pages explicitly offer that product for your date
  • Children under 10 (officially not recommended)
  • A same-day ferry after Day 5
  • Starting without a confirmed official booking

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Fit walkers with a confirmed official booking
  • People who will carry 3 L+ a day and read the official packing list
  • Groups who accept limited bail-outs and regenerating interior as part of the product

Decision gates (say them out loud)

  • No booking: do not start — day walks (Platypus, cape loops, Ravine) are the honest substitute
  • Fitness or kids under 10: bounce before you pay
  • Catastrophic fire danger: you leave the trail — that is official, not optional
  • Someone wants “just the coast days”: use a licensed operator package or do not book independent

What success looks like

  • Booking, water plan and finish bus sorted before Day 1
  • Five honest days or an early honest bounce — not a social-media fastest-time chase
  • A bounced booking plus a calm icon-and-platypus week still counts as a successful KI trip

What to bring

Practical kit for Southern Ocean wind, cape boardwalks and patchy coverage

  • Water 2–3 L+ per personRemote sections and KIWT have no reliable drinking water. Rainwater at camps is non-potable.
  • Windproof / waterproof shellCape du Couedic and Remarkable Rocks are exposed Southern Ocean headlands — wind closes sites.
  • Sun hat + high SPFBoardwalks and granite are open; post-fire woodland still has thin shade in places.
  • Grip walking shoesBoardwalks are easy; Snake Lagoon / Ravine rock-hops get slick after rain. Stay off seaward rocks.
  • Day pack 20–30 LWater, layers, snacks and a small first-aid kit for the icon day plus any extra walk.
  • Offline maps (Avenza)Telstra can be patchy; download official park maps while you still have reception.
  • HeadlampDawn platypus walks and winter ferry days run out of light faster than mainland visitors expect.
  • First-aid + blister kitRemote west-end days are a long way from Kingscote if something goes wrong.
  • Satellite messenger (remote / KIWT)Optional planning note for West Bay, Ravine and KIWT — 000 needs reception. Not required for the sealed icon road.
  • Insect protectionPlatypus Waterholes and swamp edges can be buggy, especially after rain.
  • Warm mid-layerWinter and wind at the capes feel much colder than Kingscote or Adelaide.
  • Power bankScreenshot alerts, ferry tickets and offline maps; charging is limited west of the visitor centre.
