Cape Borda side trip

Best for: Second-day visitors who already did the southern icons

Cape Borda is a different ocean aspect and a quieter precinct. Self-guided access is included in Flinders Chase entry on current official wording — [VERIFY] if you hold a Tour Pass instead.

This is a dedicated half-day, not an afterthought after Admirals Arch. Road notes after rain matter. Official: Harvey’s Return camping is 4WD recommended; 2WD is subject to road conditions. Shackle Road may close after rain.

Official whale season is mid-May to late October (mostly southern right). Binoculars from the precinct beat scrambling for a closer cliff. There is no café at the cape.

Fuel in town first. Phone the park (08 8553 4444) or visitor centre (0428 766 269) if rain has just passed. Always verify on parks.sa.gov.au the morning you go.

Track status, weather and closures change — verify on parks.sa.gov.au before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. Night before

    Road check + one-hike rule

Agree: lightstation precinct is the main event. One hike only — Harvey’s Return (~1 km, steep) OR Return Road (~9 km / ~3 hrs). Screenshot maps and the official park page. If rain just passed, default Plan B is Rocky River + platypus.

  2. 07:30–08:00

Fuel · water · road check

Parndana or Kingscote. Phone the park / visitor centre if rain has just passed. Pay entry if you have not already. Do not leave town on fumes hoping the cape has a bowser.

  3. 08:00–09:30

    Drive northwest

This is not next door to Remarkable Rocks. Budget real drive time. If staff said 4WD after rain, bounce to Rocky River instead. Wildlife still on the road.

  4. 09:30–10:30

    Lightstation precinct

Clifftop views, possible whales in season, confirm which buildings are open. Self-guided tour booking may be required for some access — check official pages. Binoculars from the precinct beat scrambling.

  5. 10:30–12:30

    One hike only

Harvey’s Return (~1 km, steep, from the campground picnic table by site one on official wording) or Return Road (~9 km, old cart track, cemetery, finish option at the Clifftop Hike). Not both. Turn around if knees fail on the first pitch.

  6. Afternoon

    Reverse with buffer

No café at the cape. Eat in town. Do not add a southern-icon revisit unless you still have a fat clock. If you camp at Harvey’s Return, treat access as 4WD until conditions are clearly kind.

Parking & access tips

  • Signed lightstation parking only.
  • Do not block emergency access.
  • Harvey’s Return campground access: 4WD recommended; 2WD subject to conditions.
  • If Shackle Road is closed after rain, you do not invent a farm-track alternative.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Return Road 9 km hike
  • Same-day Admirals Arch encore
  • Harvey’s Return in fading light
  • Squeezing this after a late southern-icon lunch on a ferry day

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Second-day visitors who already did Rocks and Arch
  • People who want a quieter cliff and possible whales
  • Groups who will treat it as a dedicated half-day

Decision gates (say them out loud)

  • Rain just passed or staff say 4WD: bounce to Rocky River
  • Knees fail on Harvey’s Return’s first pitch: precinct views were enough
  • Ferry tonight: do not start Return Road
  • Wind howling: binoculars from the car park, not a cliff scramble

What success looks like

  • A calmer northwest morning with fuel still in the tank
  • One hike done honestly, or precinct-only if the road said no
  • Notes: worth a second night west, or once was enough

After rain

  • Treat Harvey’s Return access as 4WD until staff say otherwise.
  • Rocky River + platypus is the honest bounce.

What to bring

Practical kit for Southern Ocean wind, cape boardwalks and patchy coverage

  • Water 2–3 L+ per personRemote sections and KIWT have no reliable drinking water. Rainwater at camps is non-potable.
  • Windproof / waterproof shellCape du Couedic and Remarkable Rocks are exposed Southern Ocean headlands — wind closes sites.
  • Sun hat + high SPFBoardwalks and granite are open; post-fire woodland still has thin shade in places.
  • Grip walking shoesBoardwalks are easy; Snake Lagoon / Ravine rock-hops get slick after rain. Stay off seaward rocks.
  • Day pack 20–30 LWater, layers, snacks and a small first-aid kit for the icon day plus any extra walk.
  • Offline maps (Avenza)Telstra can be patchy; download official park maps while you still have reception.
  • HeadlampDawn platypus walks and winter ferry days run out of light faster than mainland visitors expect.
  • First-aid + blister kitRemote west-end days are a long way from Kingscote if something goes wrong.
  • Satellite messenger (remote / KIWT)Optional planning note for West Bay, Ravine and KIWT — 000 needs reception. Not required for the sealed icon road.
  • Insect protectionPlatypus Waterholes and swamp edges can be buggy, especially after rain.
  • Warm mid-layerWinter and wind at the capes feel much colder than Kingscote or Adelaide.
  • Power bankScreenshot alerts, ferry tickets and offline maps; charging is limited west of the visitor centre.
