Wind closed the rocks: Platypus Waterholes is the plan, not Ravine
Severe wind can close Admirals Arch and Remarkable Rocks. Why hunting an unofficial viewpoint fails, and why Platypus Waterholes — not West Bay or Ravine — is the honest Plan B.

Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park entry fees, official camping bookings and KI Wilderness Trail permits are never affiliated.

The official park page is blunt: during a severe weather event with damaging winds, Admirals Arch and Remarkable Rocks may close for public safety. That is the answer. There is no clever unofficial granite worth a rescue.
The second failure is inflating the disappointment into a 4WD west-end adventure you did not pack for. Platypus Waterholes is the Plan B that still uses the visitor-centre precinct.
The decision
If the icons are closed, do not walk around a barrier or scramble seaward granite for “the same photo.” Drownings have occurred on the seaward side even when the site is open.
Spend the window on Platypus Waterholes (official 4.5 km / about 2 hours from the visitor centre) or Heritage Walk + café. If you still have a ferry clock, reverse earlier, not later.
Why the unofficial viewpoint fails

Remarkable Rocks

The closure is for damaging winds on exposed Southern Ocean platforms. Standing on a different lump of granite does not cancel that physics.
Cape du Couedic Road can also close for a dated event (the KI Marathon notice of 23 August 2026 is one example). If the road is closed, the loop hike is closed too.
Plan B that still feels like Flinders Chase
Platypus Waterholes from the visitor centre. Quiet platforms. Platypus are possible, not promised. Regenerating woodland after the 2019–20 fires is the story.
If you have a 4WD and a live “road open” check, West Bay is a different day — not a tantrum add-on after a closed arch.
If you wanted KIWT, that still needs its own official booking. A wind day at the cape is not a trail start.
Who this is for
Anyone whose whole trip was two Instagram pins. Anyone about to drive Shackle Road in a 2WD hire car because “we came all this way.”
Failure modes
Closed boardwalks → Ravine Road in a sedan → recovery. Fix: stay on sealed 2WD and the visitor-centre walks.
Closed boardwalks → seaward scramble at Remarkable Rocks. Fix: leave. The photo is not worth it.
Official vs this page
Live closures belong on the Flinders Chase park page and the visitor centre. This page only names the Plan B official pages already imply when they tell you to check before you travel.
FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Will the visitor centre still be open if the cape is closed?
Often yes — the centre sits about 800 m outside the park on South Coast Road — but confirm on the day. Tickets, toilets and The Rocks Café are the usual reset. [VERIFY] hours on parks.sa.gov.au.
Is Platypus Waterholes always open when the cape is not?
Do not assume. Fire danger can close the whole park. Rain can affect other roads. Check alerts; then use the visitor-centre walks if they are signed open.
