Adelaide same-day Flinders Chase usually fails the ferry clock
Cape Jervis to Penneshaw is a ferry, then about 1.5 hours to the visitor centre. Why stacking Adelaide + both icons + a dusk sailing is the failure, and what overnight actually buys.

The failure is the clock, not the granite. Flinders Chase sits on western Kangaroo Island. Most people reach it via Cape Jervis ↔ Penneshaw, then a long island drive. Treating that as a Melbourne-style lookout afternoon is how groups miss the sailing they already paid for.
This is an unofficial planning note. Ferry times, park entry and road status live with the operators and parks.sa.gov.au. We do not invent a sailing.
The decision
If you sleep on the island, do the sealed icon road (visitor centre → Remarkable Rocks → Admirals Arch) and reverse. Protect the next sailing only if you actually sail that day.
If you sleep in Adelaide, book an overnight on KI or a guided day that already owns the ferry. Do not invent a DIY loop that assumes empty queues, no wind, and a perfect sailing.
Why the stack fails

Mainland drive to Cape Jervis, ferry, Penneshaw traffic, 1.5 hours west, visitor-centre ticketing, 20–25 minutes to the rocks, coaches at midday, arch steps, reverse, 1.5 hours east, check-in cut-off. That is a logistics sport.
Wind can close the two icons. A dated event can close Cape du Couedic Road for hours. Neither cares that you have a dusk sailing.
Plan B that still feels like Flinders Chase
Overnight Kingscote or closer (Parndana / Vivonne / official Rocky River if booked): full icon day, optional Platypus Waterholes, no dusk panic.
Same-day ferry with a real buffer: one icon, not both, and skip Weirs Cove. If the buffer is already gone at the visitor centre, turn around.
Fly to Kingscote only if the scheduled flight and the park day still leave a reverse you can live with — not a hope.
Who this is for
Anyone who circled Adelaide, Penneshaw and Remarkable Rocks on the same Saturday. Anyone treating per-person entry as a vehicle pass that makes distance free.
Failure modes
Leaving Adelaide after breakfast for both icons and a dusk sailing → you skip the arch angrily or you miss the boat. Fix: overnight, or one icon.
Adding West Bay because the boardwalks were short → 4WD, rain closures, and a ferry you cannot buy back. Fix: sealed road only on day one.

FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Can I still day-trip if I take the first sailing?
Only with a written reverse clock and a willingness to skip the second icon. Overnight is still kinder. Confirm live ferry times with the operator — this site is not a timetable.
Does park entry include the ferry?
No. Ferry is a separate commercial ticket. Park entry is per person on parks.sa.gov.au. Camping and KIWT are different bookings again.
