    Wind can close the rocks and arch. CFS can close the park on severe fire-danger days. Download maps before you lose reception.

Decision hierarchy

Flinders Chase rewards restraint: one sealed icon day done well beats a 4WD fantasy after the ferry. A wind-closed cape plus Platypus Waterholes still counts as a successful visit.

Platypus Waterholes

The best longer day walk from the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre: regenerating woodland, Black Swamp and Rocky River viewing platforms. Dawn and dusk give the best platypus odds. Rebuilt after the 2019–20 fires.

A capped, bookable 5-day trek from the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre to Kelly Hill Caves. Separate fee from day entry. Remote coast and regenerating interior. Limited bail-outs — treat it as a committed expedition.

Wind, waves, fire and coverage

  • Stay on signed rocks at Remarkable Rocks — drownings have occurred on the seaward side.
  • Freak waves and steep steps at Admirals Arch; keep legal distance from seals.
  • Severe wind can close both icons. The park can close on Catastrophic (and possibly Extreme) fire-danger days — check CFS.
  • Telstra coverage is patchy; 000 needs reception. Download offline maps. Pay fees before you enter.
  • Wildlife on roads at dawn and dusk. No drones. No pets.

One-day classic: Remarkable Rocks & Admirals Arch

Visitor centre ticketing, Remarkable Rocks boardwalk, Admirals Arch and seals, optional Weirs Cove — reverse the same sealed road. Protect the ferry clock if you are sailing the same evening.

Two-day west end: icons + camp or cottage

Day 1 classic icons. Overnight at official Rocky River Campground or a nearby town. Day 2 dawn platypus walk or Cape Borda — not both hard.

Wildlife & heritage day (Rocky River precinct)

Platypus Waterholes, Heritage Walk, May’s Homestead / Postman’s Cottage exteriors, kangaroos and wallabies around Rocky River. The right day when the cape is closed by wind.

Do I need to pay to enter Flinders Chase National Park?

Yes. Day entry is a per-person fee (not a flat vehicle fee), bought online in advance or at the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre. Official Fees tab snapshot 15 Aug 2026: adult $13, concession $10.50, child (4–15) $7.50, family $33 — [VERIFY] live. The same official park page header also lists “Site entry $22.40 per person” without a breakdown; confirm the ticket you need at booking. Camping and KI Wilderness Trail are separate systems.

How do I get there from Adelaide?

Most visitors take a SeaLink or KI Connect ferry (Cape Jervis ↔ Penneshaw) or a scheduled flight to Kingscote, then drive west. Allow about 90 minutes from Kingscote and about 1.5 hours from Penneshaw to the visitor centre at Karatta. Factor the ferry timetable into any same-day return.

What should I do first on a first visit?

Start at the visitor centre, then drive the sealed road to Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch. Add Platypus Waterholes if energy and daylight remain. Do not stack Ravine, West Bay or KIWT onto a first icon day.

Is there mobile coverage in the park?

Limited. Official language is that Telstra is the carrier with coverage, and it can be patchy or unreliable — especially in low-lying and remote spots. Pay fees before you enter. 000 needs reception. Download offline maps while you still have signal.

Is this site official NPWS SA?

No. This is an independent unofficial guide published by Farming Domains (Ian Piggott). For alerts, fees, camping and KIWT bookings use parks.sa.gov.au only.
